Last spring, I spoke to my friend Lisa Schroeder about the Market, a scary word referencing what’s selling, what isn’t, who bought what and what trend is hot. Basically, all the stuff writers try to push away as we Create that later comes back to give us The Angst. We concluded that there should be a group for contemporary writers. Contemporary–you know, real things happening to real kids in real life. We both write in other genres (and I love me some princess power), but it seemed to us that contemporary fiction wasn’t getting the love it deserved. So we brainstormed some authors and Lisa took off. Lisa is an astounding organizer and a wonderful leader, and it is through her efforts that The Contemps (www.thecontemps.com) was formed.

The group includes 21 YA authors with books coming out from Sept 2010-August 2011. Our mission is simple–to spotlight contemporary fiction for young adults through blog posts, author events, and (over)sharing from our teen years. We have fun things planned all year long, including a contest going on NOW through November 15, 2010.
Read 18 of our 21 books and enter to win ALL 21 BOOKS. Visit the Get Involved page for more information

The last few months have been pretty hectic around the Leavitt casa (which, as of memorial weekend, also happens to be my parent’s casa, but that’s another tale). I noticed a few weeks ago that I’d become so focused on accomplishing all the things I needed to do—for my family, for my move, for my work—that I wasn’t really reaching out beyond the immediate me. The excuses, however valid, just kept building up until they’d created a wall between me and those who I could potentially serve.

I often write IMPACT when signing my name in books. It’s a word that has new meaning to my main character, Desi, as she takes on different princesses’ identities. I believe in that word—believe everyone in this world has the ability to positively impact others—but sometimes felt weird writing it. How could I tell others to reach out when my own arms were folded so tightly to my chest?

So this summer I’m making a pledge to somehow make a positive impact every day and record my experiences in a personal journal. It’s not a new or revolutionary idea, but it’s a good one. Potential adventures: helping a little old lady cross the street, giving advice to an aspiring author, finally getting someone in my family on What Not To Wear, or donating time/money to assorted charities. It doesn’t have to be a huge or monumental task. I think this quote by Judith Kelman says it well, “Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us daily.”

To kick it off, I’m also doing a feature on my blog: The Impact Initiative. I’ve asked over 20 other authors to share a time when
they were touched by another person OR
a time when they reached out to someone else. Every weekday for the next month, I’ll post their beautiful, thoughtful, heart-touching essays.

To make it even more fun, I’ll be doing a weekly giveaway of some of these authors’ books, as well as contributing a boat-load of signed copies of PRINCESS FOR HIRE (every winner will get two books—one to keep, one to share).

To enter, all you have to do is post a comment. Double points if you share your own story.

You can enter EVERY DAY, and of course you’ll want to because you’ll be checking back to read these essays.

Starting with… mine.

I sometimes get girls writing to ask for beauty advice, assuming perhaps that a “princess” author must know about “princessy” things. If you’ve read PRINCESS FOR HIRE, you could probably guess that I don’t believe princess should be equated with outer beauty or even girly tendencies, but let’s not get into a discussion on that here–that’s what my future princess books are for!

So although I have some limited knowledge on the subject (take a bath, brush your teeth, wear clean clothes), I’m by no means a expert–I’m lucky if I can get my own daughters’ hair combed. But I do have a cousin (by marriage, but I still claim spousal relations as my own, especially the awesome ones) who has some fantastic hair skillz, and has set up a blog to show you how to recreate her styles. Her daughter–who I suppose is my second cousin through marriage?–serves as a model. My own daughter carries around her hairstyle book, often flipping to pages and asking why HER mommy can’t do that with hair.

Because I’m WRITING about it. Dearest. And you also have more hair than a yeti. Beautiful yeti hair, but still very hard to tame.

So, if you’re looking to create a fun princess ‘do, check out Princess Hairstyles*

*I endorse this product not because of my familial connection, but because this woman is a ARTIST, and I am a great supporter of the arts. Ahem.

It’s intimidating hosting a release contest for a book with PRINCESS in the title. What if someone stumbles upon my little giveaway and expects diamonds? Tiaras? Oodles of Fancy Schmancy? How can I possible live up to those expectations?

Oh I can. And I will.

Because I’m busting it OUT, y’all. I’m offering a prize so epic that princesses, real live princesses, will enter. Few, of course, will win. I’m pretty sure they’ll get over it, though.

Here’s how the game is played:

To enter, you must spread the princessy love because that’s how books are sold. Word of Mouth. And although I have a big mouth, I can only yell so much before I lose my voice. Just ask my family. I’m all about creativity, so I shall let you decide which Word of Mouth (hitherto called WOM) you want to do, but here are some options:

1. My www.princessforhire.com just went live. Swank web design once again delivered The Awesome, and so of course I want the awesome shared. There’s lots of interactive stuff like quizzes and an advice column and the first two chapters can be read (for free!) under the sneak peak section. Check it out (yay! You’re already here!), and tell your friends to check it out via email, blog, facebook, twitter, hand-written letter, carrier pigeon (Nope. That joke will never get old for me.)

2. Speaking of all those cool little social network thingies listed above, that’s a great place share my cover—add it as your facebook or twitter photo because who doesn’t want to be represented by sparkles? Shiny, shiny sparkles.

Hypnotize your friends with the shining. Notice I didn’t capitalize that like The Shining.

That movie scares me, plus there are zero princesses involved.

3. Remember my widget? Can you believe it now has single digits? Are you having a hard time breathing too? No? Oh. Well, post it, share it, email it. Widget that widget up.

4. Pre-order/buy the book. I debated what to do on this. I guess you can send me your receipt, or even a picture of you with the book (oh my gosh, do that! I love book pictures) OR come to one of my signings and just say hi. If you don’t have “proof”, you can also simply comment and let me know you’ve bought it (owning an ARC doesn’t count). This is me using my Stern Voice: I trust you.

5. Once you’ve read the book, review it on your blog, amazon, BN.com, goodreads , ect. Pretend you’re doing a book report in school, except no mobiles or dioramas. Unless you want to do either, in which case you’ll instantly become my new BFF.

6. Old fashioned way: Go tell five people about PRINCESS FOR HIRE. Preferrably five people you think might like PRINCESS FOR HIRE. You choose this option and, again, I’ll just take you’re word you did it. Because when you lie, you make kittens cry.

Maybe you have a better idea, though. Maybe you want to go buy thirty copies of my book, use the bookcovers to make a fashion-forward dress a la PROJECT RUNWAY, then wear the ensemble to an Oscar party. If so, you’re crazy, but I fully support your crazy. I want to marry your crazy.

Then, after you’ve done your thing, pop back to this post and leave a comment letting me know what you’ve done. I’m not doing a point value to any one WOM (although the Project Runway thing would probably equal an automatic win), but I will give one entry for every WOM you do, up to five entries a person. Ah, heck, if you do something really creative, I’ll give you five entries for that one thing. Go wild.

Okay, now that you are salivating (which is decidedly UNroyal, so you really should stop), here are the prizes. And I’m making this international because I have a secret fantasy that I already have a following in Madagascar.

The Grandest of Grand Prizes (over $100 dollars in cash and prizes)

–$30 gift certificate to bookseller of your choice.

–$25 Chevron gift card to use in case your floating bubble is in the shop (and if you can’t drive, you can buy lots and lots of candy. I mean, HEALTY SNACKS)

–A $15 MAC gift certificate so you can buy your own compact to match the one on my cover

–signed copy of PRINCESS FOR HIRE

–10 signed bookmarks to share with your friends

–a tiara (um, not real. But tis shiny!)

–Princess bubbles

–Princess mirror cling

–Princess wand

–candy necklace
–the kitchen sink. Or a picture of my kitchen sink (Hey, remember how I said last week we lost my friend’s keys. In the garbage disposal. It’s always the most obvious place)

But wait, there is MORE. Check it:

–YOUR CHOICE OF

——– a 15 minute phone call with me

——— an appearance by YOU in Princess for Hire Book 2 (meaning I either use your name, or you choose a name. I hope we don’t get too many Ebenezer’s entering)

———-(for writers) a critique of your query letter or first three chapters

Still totally awesome prize

–The other books that you’ll probably like if you like my book prize pack:

SCONES AND SENSIBILITY by Lindsay Eland

Plus, this is pretty much the most awesome book trailer ever, and KARMA CLUB by Jessica Brody looks super cute. There is some kissing in the trailer, as this is a young adult (teen) novel. Comes out April 2010. Check it.
